Mint art deco

Last week I used a Catrice polish in my nail art without really showing it properly. Today I'm making amends by using it again and this time making sure the nail art and pictures do its best to really show of this minty shade.

I hope Karin doesn't mind me using the same green two weeks in a row? I'm hoping to see plenty more greens at Vacker & Underbar today!

I have stamped over the green base using a stamping plate by Emily de Molly, EDM03 (one of the few things available with international shipping from her website!). The plate was of good quality but require some expertise when used since the lines are so fine. I had a hard time getting the stamp to transfer perfectly and also aligning my stamper correctly. More practice necessary!

And now for a closer inspection of Mint Me Up. I used two coats and what a beauty! This feels like a very good friend to my old favourite OPI Mermaid's Tears. But it has shimmer! Loving it.

Polishes used: Catrice Mint Me Up, KIKO 374 and Barry M Foil Effect in gold

Still here

This weeks prompt for Nail Art Sunday honestly didn't spark too much creativity with me. The idea to recreate your first nail art is a good one, but my first post (from March 2013) was in itself not very inspirational. As in if I wanted to do the same manicure today, it would look more or less the same, dotted flowers and a wee bit of text. What's the development in that? Instead I played around with a few ideas and plenty of remover and finally settled for something that still holds resemblance to the first manicure but without being the same thing.

When looking at the two manicures side by side (ignoring the colour difference in my skintone) I'd say that the most striking difference is really how my nails look much more adult now. My nails used to be shorter than I'd be able to keep them today (my nail beds have grown quite a bit this past year). When I see them now I think they look very childlike. My lesson? Not everyone looks like The Nailasaurus with short nails ;)
Zoya Charla is a beautiful polish but somewhat difficult to photograph. Hence I had to adjust the colours in Photoshop making me look extra yellow.

Polishes used: Zoya Charla, OPI Goldeneye, Zoya Raven and a black pen

Denna veckas utmaning i Nail Art Sunday blev ingen favorit hos mig.

Read My Nails

I was thinking about different ways to push myself to be more creative with nail art for the new year. One of the things I came up with is to create a nail design that is inspired by every book that I finish reading. This is something that will allow myself to think outside the box and is also a nice way for me to part with the book (sometimes I feel sort of lost after having finished a book, I don't know what to do next). I will call this series Read My Nails until I come up with something better.

Since Karin is also an avid book reader it is only fitting that my first book nails are also green enough to be part of Green Wednesday at Vacker & Underbar.

The first book I completed this year is Bel Canto by Ann Patchett. It was a good read based around a hostage situation gone wrong. The book takes place over some time during which a number of people are held hostage in a large estate in an unnamed South American country. Among them is a famous soprano. Her singing is a central aspect of this book and is what inspired by nail art. Bel Canto means beautiful singing in Italian...
My base is a saran wrapped mixture of OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls and Catrice Mint Me Up topped with some discreet glitter from Dollish Polish. I wanted something soft and discreet and think I succeeded!

I believe in travelling lights

I can't believe we finally have snow now! Yay! Are you also cheering or were you hoping we would skip right forward to spring? I am more or less always happy to get snow and today I have nail art that fits the weather. I decided to do a ski-inspired manicure for Nail Art Sunday.

I wasn't able to make Nail Art Sunday last week because I was travelling which is ironic since the theme was travelling. Since this week is open I wanted to stick with the travelling theme since it's not only something I enjoy but also something I do quite often. As you might know my S lives rather far from me so I get a fair amount of travelling visiting him. Additionally I travel just for fun whenever I have the chance. My nails are inspired by the recent ski trip we did over New Years.

The base is built up to resemble a snowstorm using a layer each of the following polishes: OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls, Lac Attack Beauxbaton, Essie Ballet Slippers (to tone it down a bit) and finally Dollish Polish Iocane Powder.

Year in review, 2013

I am probably the last person to jump the "Sum up 2013" bandwagon but I would still very much like to do just that. 2013 is my first blogging year and hence I will say that I can see great progress in my nail art skills but probably even more so in my photography and all that goes with it.

Like Helena did in her first favourites of 2013 post I will tell you that given the expansion of my Helmer I bought/got on average just above 20 polishes a month. The greatest expansion happened when I was travelling, for instance in five days in Chicago this spring I bought a whopping 60 bottles of nail polish. For the new year, I will try to buy less than in 2013.

My blogging goal for 2014 is to use more of my over 150 bottles of untried polish. I will also try to get more creative with my nail art. Often I find myself short of time and putting together things that are perhaps nice but not really inspirational. I want to be better and find ways to create personal and more unique content.

As for the best of 2013 I have divided this list into three sections. The first three posts are the ones that have received the most comments from the lovely people that read my blog. The second three are picked by my favourite everything S, because I wanted to get his opinion and also that from a man. The final three are my favourites.

Reader's favourites (images link to original post):

Pink and orange gradient for Breast cancer awareness month. One of my favorite gradients of the year.

Black and white checkered nails. I really liked these nails, they were in your face enough to get me a few compliments at work too!

A summery gradient with a subtle stamping. Not my favourite nail art, I think this came off as soon as the pictures were taken.

Favourites of S (images link to original post):

Water marbled candy cane look. I do like this one too, but think I might have done stronger water marbles.

Black and white look for the 31 Day Challenge. I like this look, just wish I could find a way to make sure the black doesn't crackle from the top coat. Would otherwise love to do more looks like this.

Inspired by the movie In the Mood for Love, part of the 31 Day Challenge. I love this look and am happy S picked it for me.

My personal favourites:

Striped nails for day 12 of the 31 Day Challenge. I just think this was such a great colour combination. It is unlike the checkered look not in your face but feels rather classy.

Stamped look with accent caviar beads for day 31 of the 31 Day Challenge. I love the beaded accented heart on this look. And you can't go wrong with stamping!

A sugary look with a pretty KIKO polish. Last but not least a nail art featuring just a single polish but still managing to be interesting and eye catching.

See you in 2014!

Slutligen mina tre favoriter.

New year, new polish

2014 is here! I am starting this new year with another active excursion, doing a couple of days of skiing in the Alps with my favourite S. S recently discovered skiing and is now hooked! What else can I do but tag along?

Anyways, I wanted to get right into the green groove of the new year. After all, it's not only January 1st but also Green Wednesday. My green is Illamasqua Viridian that was part of a Holiday duo last year if I'm not mistaking. I paired it with the other polish from the same duo, Glitterati. Glitterati requires two coats but like three layers of Seche Vite where Viridian requires a single coat and looks good even without topcoat. I hope you enjoy this festive nail art!

Two coats of Glitterati. It was an easy polish to work with and required just a little bit of glitter placement.
